Sod-Turning Ceremony for New Barrhaven Catholic School

SOD-TURNING CEREMONY FOR NEW
BARRHAVEN CATHOLIC SCHOOL

On Thursday, September 20, I was pleased to participate in the official sod-turning ceremony on the site of our new south Barrhaven elementary school, which is due to open in September 2013.  The school will be located on the corner of Cambrian Road and Kilbirnie Drive.

l to r Superintendent Peter Atkinson, Trustee Alison Baizana, Vice-Chair of the Board
Ted Hurley, Ottawa Catholic School Board Chair Mark Mullan, Director of Education
Julian Hanlon,, City Councillor (Barrhaven) Jan Harder, and students

The brief ceremony began with my words of welcome to all the students, parents, board and school officials, and other dignitaries gathered.  Following speeches by Trustee Alison Baizana, Chair of the Board Mark Mullan, and Director of Education Julian Hanlon, students from St. Emily and St. Joseph High School blended soil from their schools with that surrounding the new school. Father Jesse (Jessimar) Cavan-Tapia, Pastor of St. Andrew Roman Catholic Parish, then blessed the site.  Following the ceremony, everyone headed over to St. Emily for a reception.
