Entering the world of blogging

Today, with some trepidation but much enthusiasm, I am entering the world of blogging.

On my blog, I will post journal entries, pictures and videos of my activities as Superintendent of Continuing Education and Safe Schools with the Ottawa Catholic School Board as well as links to interesting articles, blog posts, etc. related to education.  I'll also review articles and books on learning.

In the near future, I will also be self-publishing, in serial format, a historical fiction novel I have written called A Gunner's Life, which is based on the life of my great-great-grandfather Alexander Atkinson and the product of years of research in Canada and England.

Book Review:  Personal Learning Networks

I credit co-authors Will Richardson and Rob Mancabelli with nudging me into the world of blogging.  In Personal Learning Networks, they argue that it is not enough for educators to employ 21st century on-line tools and technologies with their students.  They must employ them in their own learning practice.  Only in this way can they lead by example, modelling "safe, effective, and ethical ways" to navigate on-line personal networks.  Today's educators must be co-learners with their students in the collaborative and "thin-walled" (opened to the on-line world) project-based classroom of today.

The authors give simple but practical advice on how educators can get started with respect to using the most popular on-line network tools, including Twitter, Diigo, Google Reader, Blogger, and Facebook.  Read an excerpt from the book at:
